Triviacycle

CONCEPTUAL PROJECT – 2023

BREIF PROVIDED BY TERRACYCLE

DURATION 3 WEEKS

How can a bin encourage children and adults to recycle more in public spaces by providing a fun experience?

Designed for Terracycle as a partnership with Tom's of Maine, Triviacycle encourages recycling through a fun gamified experience. Four openings on the bin correspond to four answers to a trivia question. The reward for recycling is having fun, not a material prize, promoting positive habits.

Triviacycle is designed for public spaces such as schools.

The bin has four openings that correspond to four answers to a trivia question. Users enter their answer by throwing their waste into the opening that matches their answer. Vinyl graphics can be applied to the front of the bin for consistency with the Tom’s of Maine brand.

The trivia question is displayed alongside four answers, 1 point is awarded per pound of waste recycled, 2 additional points are for a correct answer. A leaderboard shows each school’s point totals.

The case is made of two main components; the recycled plastic base and the aluminum cover. The cover can be lifted off and set aside for easy access to the internal bins. There are four bins so the weight of each one can be measured independently to determine which answer the user selected.

THE PROBLEM

“Most people seldom go out of their way for something they don’t usually do unless there is something to gain from it. People who are only motivated by rewards lack the ability to self-motivate in their absence. Even good Gamifications that produce immediate results fail in the long run to motivate people. The ideal and truly successful Gamification is one where at least a single person continues the encouraged behavior long after the Gamification is ended.”

RESEARCH

EvoBin by EvoEco

Interactive Glass Recycling Bin by Jack Lee and Trinna Wu

Bottle Bank Arcade by The Fun Theory

Research focused on examples of interactive recycling bins that do not use a material reward as an incentive. These designs create a rewarding experience that will make people want to interact.

  • Initial sketches explore a wide range of different interactive recycling bins. Both the functionality and the form were explored, before expanding on a trivia-based game idea and exploring forms made from sheet material.
